Truman Spring

Truman Spring is a native of the State of Arkansas. He began a career as a salesman in 1937 and continued in that vocation until August 1950. At that time, following four years of fill-in preaching and upon the insistence of the brethren, he gave up his sales career to give his full-time attention to the proclamation of the gospel.

Truman’s first full-time work was with what was then known as the Hillcrest Church of Christ –now the Arlington Heights Church of Christ-in Corpus Christi, Texas. In his sixth year there, he was contacted by the Central congregation in Amarillo and accepted the work with them in 1955. In 1959, he accepted the challenge of the work with the Garden Oaks Church in Houston, Texas, where he served for almost eight years. During that time, the congregation grew to become the second largest Church of Christ in the Houston area. Because of increased calls to conduct gospel meetings, he terminated his work at Garden Oaks in 1966, made his home in Amarillo, and went into full-time meeting work.

During the following six years, Truman conducted meetings in 15 states and five foreign countries. In 1972 he was once again challenged with a call from Houston. This time it was from the Sharpstown congregation, now known as Sugar Grove. The Spring family moved back to Houston and labored with Sharpstown until June 1977. On June 26th of that year, he began his work with the Jersey Village church in northwest Houston and served them as a full-time minister until August 1984. He continued as part-time Associate in establishing programs he had long wanted to initiate until July 1986, when he was asked to come and work for a year with the Lake Houston congregation.

From August 1987 Truman did interim assignments, raised funds for India, and conducted several meetings. In May of 19889, he was asked to return to the Garden Oaks congregation. He worked with them until his wife’s health dictated he retire by the end of 1990. Brother Spring devoted his time to his wife Evelyn until her death on April 18, 1992.

Ten months following her death, in February 1993, he was asked to assume the preaching duties at northwest Houston’s Highway 249 congregation, where he continued until his 80th birthday. He preached his last sermon there on June 15, 1997.

In his 50+years of preaching the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ, Truman served seven congregations—five of them in Houston—while having conducted 421 meetings…and still counting.
