Do What Jesus Tells You

In John chapter 2 we read of Jesus’ first miracle, the turning of water into wine at the wedding in Cana.  Sometimes missed in that story is the conversation that Jesus has with His mother Mary.  Look at verse 3:
When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
In the whole Bible is there any other statement so simple, yet so incredibly to the point, than Mary's statement to the servants?  DO WHATEVER JESUS TELLS YOU TO DO.  Think of all the problems in our lives that would disappear if we would follow Mary's advice here.  Think of all of the world's concerns that would immediately be eliminated if we just simply did what Jesus tells us to do.

Jesus' time came when He willingly allowed Himself to be beaten, spat upon, humiliated and finally murdered by His own creation.  His time came when, with the sins of the world resting heavily on His shoulders, He looked down from the cross and said, "It is finished" and gave up His spirit.  His time came when 3 days later He arose from the dead, winning the final victory over death, leaving only His burial linen lying in the empty tomb to be found by Mary Magdalene, Peter and John.  His time came when He appeared again to His disciples, leaving them with His final instructions, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."  As if there was any other evidence needed to prove who He was, His time came when He was taken up to heaven before the very eyes of His disciples to sit at His Father's side.

Oh, what a more wonderful place it would be if we all just simply did what Jesus said to do.  There would be no arguments over church doctrine.  There would be no more denominations.  There would be no crime, no unwanted babies, no war.  People would love and care for each other.  All racial, social and ethnic boundaries would disappear if we would all just do what Jesus told us to do.

Sounds fabulous doesn't it?   And it will be when we get to heaven.  Until then though, we must live in a world that falls woefully short of His glory.  Yet, what a difference we can make if we will simply do what He tells us.   What an impact we could have on those around us.
