Women – Christianity
By Truman E. Spring
In the book of Genesis (The book of beginnings) we learn that woman was created by God and brought to man to be his wife. So, the creation of woman and the institution of marriage occurred in paradise. So when the advertisements of the day depict “paradise” of being alone on an island with your mate, that is what it was-until sin stepped in. In paradise woman was elevated and came from the side of man-his helpmate.
Then sin entered into the world and over a period of time the role of women was relegated to nothing more than an object. In fact, prior to Christ and even in Christ's day, the role of woman had remained insignificant. It was Jesus Christ and his teaching that began to elevate the role of woman, restoring them to a place of honor.
Of all the religions of the world there is none that honors womanhood as much as the Christian religion. Where the glorious light of the gospel has shown through, woman’s position, esteem and happiness have been elevated.
In the beginning Moses penned this degree….A man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24). Therefore, it is not conducive to martial happiness for a married couple to be under the dominion of the parents of either partner.
One flesh relates to a unity of minds in purpose toward the achievement of spiritual and material goals of this life. So union means more than the conjoining of physical bodies. Certainly, the later is included but it is the oneness of man and woman that makes for happy homes.
